The River Register is looking for an experienced Writer/Reporter to join its growing news team.

The position focuses on community newspaper reporting. The writer will produce accurate, engaging, and well-written local news stories.

The Writer/Reporter will cover local news and community topics.

The role requires strong reporting and writing skills. The ideal candidate should be dependable, self-motivated, and comfortable working independently in a remote environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Report and write local news stories.
• Write feature stories.
• Cover local government.
• Cover schools and educational activities.
• Report on local businesses.
• Cover community organizations.
• Attend and report on local events.
• Conduct interviews with local sources.
• Build relationships with community sources.
• Identify strong local story ideas.
• Pitch new story ideas.
• Meet weekly deadlines.
• Work independently on assigned stories.
• Produce clean and accurate copy.
• Follow professional journalism standards.
• Take photos for stories when appropriate.
• Obtain photos when needed.

Required Qualifications

• Previous newspaper writing experience required.
• Previous newspaper reporting experience required.
• Strong news writing skills.
• Strong interviewing skills.
• Strong reporting skills.
• Understanding of AP style.
• Knowledge of basic journalism standards.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to meet deadlines consistently.
• Strong communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills.
